با استفاده از این دستگاه ها نخست آب با استفاده از چند فیلتر، پیش تصفیه شده و سپس با فشاری بیش از فشار اسمزی (که توسط پمپ فشار بالا ایجاد می شود) وارد مرحله اصلی می شود. در این مرحله آب توسط غشاء نیمه تراوا (Membrane) به دو بخش آب نسبتاً خالص و پساب تقسیم شده و از مسیرهای مجزا خارج می گردد.
